Didn't many older systems have an 8.3Gb drive limitation?
I think a bios update is required

Run
This to identify what motherboard you have to up-date the bios, and post back the results.

down load this program to your PC
then double click on it and put a new floppy in floppy drive
it makes a bootable floppy for yoy the power your PC
with the floppy in the drive and follow the instruction.
it also gives you option to copy one drive to the next.:
Maxblast disk utility (Generic )do not use it with Packard Bell computers.
it over writes DMI in BIOS

Hi Maisie,
and i bet you thought it would be easy duh what the ladz have said above is all correct, what you do depends on how you want to set the pc up, plus i'll give you another option. if you can then tell us what you want to do, we'll guide you through it.
you don't say what happened to the origial drive, if it is still working ok and there's room in the case you can run the 80gb drive as a slave i.e. in addition to the 8.4gb drive.
next would be to use the 80gb drive and just install an operating system, e.g. win 98 or win xp on there, for that you will need a copy of the operating system you want to install.
lastly, you can use your pb recovery disks with the 80gb drive, make sure you have them all, and restore the pc as to how it was when you bought it.
if you would let us know what you want to do, we can instruct you from there.

When you tried xp you probably couldn't access the internet because you didn't have an xp driver for your modem. Most pb's come with aztech smilnk modems. You can download the driver from www.smlink.com. Obviously you'd have to download it while you've got an active internet connection while it has a different version of windows or use another pc. Once downloaded copy the driver to a cd and then once you put xp on then install that driver. This is all of course if you want to have xp on the system.

Maisie did everything work apart from the internet when you had XP installed?
If you can get thru' any probs with XP it's a far better OS.

ok so you opened that file once you had upgraded to xp. Must have a rare pb machine that doesn't have an Aztech CNR modem. Has the modem ever been replaced over the years?
When you had the original version of windows on it , in device manager what was the modem called?
post back the s/n of that pb machine and i'll find out exactly what modem you have.

Try the winxp(PCI), HCF modem drivers on this site unless anyone else can provide a better driver.
