I need to open some old MS Works 4 files (WKS) preferably into Excel (Office 2000) or Office 97. System is Windows XP Home.

Excel should open them for you, just select "files of type .wks from the drop down option after clicking "open" and point it to the folder where the .wks files are stored. Files can then be edited in Excel and saved as .xls files.
