i have two users set up on my Advent notebook. the keyboard works perfectly for one user but when logged in as the other, the @ key displays ' Solutions gratefully sought

I would guess the other keyboard is set up as an American layout, you can change it in the settings i think.

I have checked the regional details and both users are set to English (United Kingdom)

The locations may be UK but have you checked the keyboard settings? Even when the location is UK, the keyboard defaults to US unless you change it.
