Hi all,

Yesterday my laptop froze up, I couldn't do anything to unfreeze except turn it off. I waited a minute and then booted it back up again, it got as far as the screen where if you press F2 it goes into the BIOS but froze again halfway through. I tried booting up via external power after removing the battery, but didn't get anything showing on screen.

There is power going to it and I have managed to get as far as it starting to load windows, but then the screen goes blank. I think it may all be connected to the fan, because it's when the fan kicks in that everything goes blank. I cannot be certain if when the fan kicks in the harddrive stays on or not, the green light that indicates the harddrive does flicker off.

My laptop is pretty old she's an ACER Aspire 1522, I've had it for at least 5 years and aside from having the M key missing it's run very well. If I were paranoid I'd think that she's jealous because I've finally got my PC up and running after a few months of waiting for a new harddrive.

If anything I'd really just like to get to the harddrive so I can grab some files that I kind of need. So, am I right in thinking there's a problem with the fan? Or overheating somewhere?

Thanks,

Amy

Since it freezes going into the BIOS screens, it certainly sounds like a hardware fault. And overheating is always a likely scenario on a laptop. But without opening it up and testing it, it is impossible to say for certain.

If you just want to recover files, you could remove the hard drive and connect it to your other PC with something like this:

Damnit. lol Well at least it waited until I got my PC up and running after a few months. Thank you for your quick reply and the link, shall definitely look into getting an adapter.

Regards,

Amy
