My daughter has returned from university for a few days and is having problems connecting to Internet Explorer and MSN messenger.

She has a Packard Bell EASYNOTE_TN65-T-440UK running Vista and Norton 360.

At Uni she uses a network connection in her halls and this runs through the University server.

On return I switched on the WiFi again and the icon in the bottom right hand corner shows that there is a good signal from the Belkin 54g network I have at home.

I cannot connect to Explorer or Messenger. On Explorer I get the error message; "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" When I press the "Diagnose Connection Problems" I am told that "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection."

On Messenger I get the error message; "We cannot sign you in to Windows Live Messenger" when I press the troubleshoot button I get a warning sign by "Key Ports." When I try to repair the problem I am told that the firewall may be blocking the connection.

In Norton Firewall settings both Explorer and Messenger are allowed.

I have installed Firefox and this works fine.

I have completed the update of SP2.

Now that Firefox is working I have also been able to update Limewire and this is also working properly.

I guess that the ports issue is where I need to look next but do not know how to take this forward.

Many Thanks

Glen

My guess is that some change to IE settings has been made to facilitate connection via the Uni server and that Messenger piggybacks on those settings. It might be worth resetting IE to its default settings on the Advanced tab in Internet options.

Of course fixing it might just create a problem when she returns to Uni..................

Thanks Grasshopper that has done it. The IT team at Nottingham can sort it out if there is a problem up there!

Thanks again.
