A residue of Works files in .wps format need to be converted to a format compatible with OpenOffice. I know there are conversion pgms available but would be grateful for any advice as to which pgm to use and any tips for the procedure.

I don't suppose you've got access to MS Office? If so, just open thenm & save them in Office format...doc, xls etc and then they're compatible with OpenOffice.
