Hi everyone!

I wonder if anyone can help with a problem I'm having with Windows Media Center on Vista Home Premium. It had been working fine for ages, I have a Freecom USB DVB-T Stick and use it with my laptop and Windows Media Center to watch Freeview. However now I constantly get the error message:

'Windows Media Center Host Module has stopped working.
Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.

I get this error message from Vista startup. I have tried clicking 'Check online for a solution', but nothing happens. And if I click 'Close' the error message disappears for a minute, but then pops back up.

When I open Windows Media Center itself, another error message says:

'COMPONENT REGISTRATION FAILURE
Some of the files needed to play radio or video are missing or corrupt. Windows Media Center component registration may have failed'.

The only option is to click 'OK', which causes Windows Media Center to crash.

I've done a Google search but cannot find a definitive answer to my question. Someone please help!

Thanks!

Julie.

ehRec.exe is the part of MCE that interfaces with the tuner. So I would guess that there are 2 possibilities:

1. MCE itself is corrupted and if that is the case you woud have to try to repair Vista from the original disc or recovery partition (depending on which you have)

2. The problem lies with the Freecom USB adapter (personally this is where my money would be). In which case, you could try uninstalling it & reinstalling. Probably also worth checking out Freecom's website to see if there are any patches for the drivers. But it could be a hardware fault with the adapter. In my experience USB adapters of all kinds have a fairly high failure rate.

Thanks for the replies guys. To eliminate my Freecom USB tuner, I unplugged it, restarted, but still got the same error messages from WMC, so I felt that the tuner wasn't the problem.

I went through all the solutions posted on Aaron Stebner's blog, restarting Vista after each attempt of course. Sfc /scannow found no problems, deleting the Recordings folder and EPG folder didn't work. Nor did manually re-registering regsvr32 jscript.dll etc (full details on blog).

However executing the following into the command prompt did work:

bcdedit -debug off

Restart Vista of course afterwards.

Thanks again for the help.

I'm not sure if your fix will hold. Because what it dioes is switch off the kernel debugging system i.e. it hasn't removed the error, it has just stopped Vista telling you about it. So you may still experience performance issues even though you don't get an error message.
