My son's laptop has lost its connection to the internet. It has been working, until today, on my wireless system, at BT system at his Uni home in Reading and at Reading University.
The Laptop is an Acer 5512WLMi operating xp.
My wireless system is a Belkin 54g.
The wireless system is accessible to two other laptops and a pc in the house. A further pc is hardwired to the Belkin router which is supplied via a Virginmedia cable modem.
The Wireless Network Connection Status box shows values for Physical Address, IP Address and Subnet Mask but not for Default Gateway DNS Server or WINS Server.
When I try to Repair the Network connection I get an error box saying "Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address"
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Glen

I'm assuming from your post, although it is not absolutely clear, that the laptop has a wireless connection to the router i.e. the wireless network icon says 'connected to Belkin (or whatever)'.
In which case, it is the actual joining the network that isn't happening i.e. the laptop is not being assigned an IP address in the correct range. That could be because a software firewall on the laptop is blocking network traffic. So check the settings.
But since it was working before, probably not. I have known routers sometimes just decide to exclude a specific PC. So it is worth trying a reboot of the router if the firewall looks OK.

Thanks Grasshopper, It was the firewall which I have reinstalled now.
Thanks
