I have a laptop running Win 98. A Belkin wifi network adapter has been installed and, thanks to various forums, works fine if not encrypted allthough you need to retry acouple of times before you can get onto the web. When any encryption is enabled I cannot get onto the web even though the wireless link is ok. It works okay on my neighbours Belkin Wireless Router but not with my Dlink DKT 710. All encryption modes have been tried. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well since the Belkin to Belkin link works OK with encryptioon, I guess you have some sort of incompatability with DLink hardware. Technically provided both Belkin & DLink have written their encryption following the standard protocols that shouldn't happen. But then a lot of things in life shouldn't happen........... rolleyes.gif

You couldcheck out the DLink website and see if there are any applicable firmware updates.

Thanks Grasshopper. Your "idiots guide to wireless networking" back in 2007 got me up and running with Wifi, after I'd thrown the various books away. From my recent experiences an idiots guide to getting Windows 98 up and running with wireless networking would help many people. It took me days reading various forums and trying numerous fixes before I had any success. Anyway thanks for taking the time to help us thickies. Back to the current problem I have visited the Dlink site but not yet asked the question I'm on my way now.

Ah well as you've found out, networking Win 98 PCs is a pain in the proverbials. When faced with the issue, I usually scream & run. Or convince them to upgrade to some version of Win NT.

Part of the problem is that the usual Win 98 install only includes part of the components that you need. Thankfully there aren't that many Win 98 PCs still out there. Or at least not in the UK.

Hello again,

WEP 64 bit should work with any old adapter.

try to connect with a wire to your wirless router first when you are enabling WEp on your adapter

then disconnect.
make sure you are using the same SSID as your router.
enable broad cast on you router
and click save the changes button.

Regards Ben
