Hi dudes...got a little problemo here...
my dad has a desktop...AMD Athlon XP2000+
Asus A7V8X-X mobo
200Gb seagate barracuda
512+256Mb RAM - Kingston + unknown vendor
Nvidia Geforce 4400fx graphics....
LG DVD Burner (H10A)
The problemo is that the pc wont turn on...the mobo is gettin some power b'cause the LED on the mobo lights up, and the onboard LAN port shows activity...but no boot.
i tried shorting the pins thinking maybe the wires were messed...no luck...i took out the fan and processor and had a look...the processor had a small purple spot on it...(has it burned out?)
the case had a fan on the inside but was never connected...
the comp has been working fine for ages, but the hdd, kingston memory and an LG dvd burner are add-ons / replacements.
All help is appreciated

It's actually very unusual for a CPU to fail unless it is overclocked. Even if they get too hot, they would normally just shut down to protect themselves. Don't know about a purple spot though.

Are you sure it isn't just a leftover from the thermal paste?
Just because the mobo lights up, you can't assume that the PSU is supplying all 3 voltages correctly. So before I started swapping anything else, I'd put a known good PSU in place.

true...but i dont really have any other equipment to test it on...and i know that the psu works as it is relatively new and has had no problems thus far, and i have tested the power using a volt meter

Did the problem occur just after you installed the new hardware

Try unpluging hardware one by one.
for example - first put back in your old memory - turn it on see what happens if still same try something else.
try everything that is removable.
I have seen a computer not start because of a bad IDE cable.
Strange but true

Hi,
i've tried all possible combinations regarding the hardware...and still nothing, and as i was busy this weekend i will go and buy another psu from the local sunday market or b grande from maplin and have a go with that...apart from that im pretty sure i need 2 replave the mobo, and mite aswell replace the cpu aswell, b'cause its cheap [amd 64 3200+ and mobo for about £100 - retail]

Can I ask a stupid question, did the CMOS battery get disconnected or has gone flat?

Appreciate the CMOS battery is usually clamped in but suggest get a replacement battery ? CR2032, take out the old battery, check it's voltage, check connections are clean, then replace. Just had a case where the battery had gone flat, no BIOS, put in replacement battery, still no BIOS, cleaned faces of new battery and connections, put battery in, pushed it around in the holder to get good conections, got BIOS.

i've tried everything so far...and everything that i can check seems to be ok. im going to buy a 2nd hand psu from the local market, if that shows that the psu is working, then its nothing but the cpu and mobo, and they will have to be replaced as its taken a long time to find out the problem
thanx
