Having followed the camera maker's instructions and installed the camera software, XP would not recognise my camcorder. This eventually solved the prob for me, I hope it helps others.

My PC did not show a 1394 connection. The Microsoft site says that XP has all it needs for firewire so I uninstalled the firewire card makers software (Unibrain in my case). I restarted the PC and the 1394 connection showed up in "internet connections" but it showed as firewalled so I went into the security page in Control Panel and chose firewall options. I unchecked the 1394 box and then when I plugged in my camera it was recognised.
