Hi,
Can anybody help me? I am trying to network a mac notebook and printer with my laptop. The printer is connected by cable to the mac notebook...... the advent laptop and mac notebook both connect wirelessly to the internet via a belkin 54g router.
I just want to, in some way, wirelessly connect my laptop to the printer which is upstairs (connected to the mac! that's the way it has to be!)
I'm afraid I need basic step by step instructions if you can, it would be most appreciated.
Regards
Joan

It is certainly possible. Although I'm not ecstatic about both connections being wireless because the print traffic has to go to the router & then back out to the mac. Plenty of scope for signal loss there.

But I don't know how to set up printer sharing on a mac. Hang on & hopefully Markw our token mac user will drop in & tell you how.

Once the printer is shared, you just need to go to Printers in Control Panel on the Advent and 'Add a printer'. Tell the wizard to look for a networked printer. It should find the shared printer & install it. Depending on the make of the printer, you may need the disc that came with it to install the drivers.

Make sure however that any software firewalls on the mac & Advent have the IP address of the other PC & the router set as 'trusted'.

Hi Grasshopper,
I am in the process of installing drivers on the advent pc....having problems with epson colour stylus 740 and compatability with windows xp!...but that is another issue that i have contacted epson about!....
But back to networking the pc and mac, as you say in your previous text they are only connected wirelessly via router not a true network...I have activated printer sharing on the mac by the way, and i have created a network set up floppy disc from the pc...can this be used in the mac to set up the network? or am I way of the mark!
Any help much appreciated.
Regards
Joan

It is a true network. I'm just worried about how reliable it will be in practice. But that is just going to depend upon site conditions.

You don't need the disc (and I doubt that you could use it on the mac anyway). If the printer is shared & the firewalls configured then you should be able to find it using Add Printer. From experience, you may need several goes before it appears. And it usually helps to reboot both PCs.

XP driver for the printer is at:

Should be quite straight forward in theory... http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?pa.../en/mh1770.html

What version of Mac OSX are you running, btw?

Oh, and Macs haven't come with floppy drives in about, oh, ten years or so... biggrin.gif

Hi again,
doh! a bit stupid about Macs I am!
The Mac is a OSX 10.4...I think.
I downloaded bonjour for windows but when I click on wizard there are no printers identified to select.
What am I doing wrong?
I have allowed printer sharing on the Mac.

OK, you've turned on printer sharing... but did you enable sharing with Windows?

From the link i posted above: "4. Select the Windows Sharing checkbox."

Also from the link... "To print to your printer using SMB/CIFS, Windows users must configure an SMB/CIFS network printer and use the Postscript printer driver, even if the printer isn't a Postscript printer. Your Mac will translate the Postscript code into code the printer can understand. Have the Windows users see their Windows documentation for information on adding a network printer."

Have you done this too?

Hi Mark,
yes I have enabled sharing with windows on the Mac.
As for the other bit about configuring with Postscript driver, i downloaded the driver but in the set up wizard when it asks for the queue name or host name, I put in what I have read on the Mac which is along the lines of .....Stylus_COLOR_740-1, or the latter which is keith-fearons-computer.local it tells me the printer address is invalid. At one point I did have another address, an IP address for the printer along the lines of http://192.168.2.2/keithfearon (but i don't remember how I found that last time). Anyway none of them worked.I also tried to browse but there are no printers or indeed anything in the window when clicked!
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help, Mark, I will keep going with this until you get fed up with it, so just let me know when that is!!!
Regards
Joan

Well, i've never actually done this so i'm working purely theoretically... and don't know what else to suggest.

Entering the IP address (the "http://192.168.2.2/keithfearon" bit you posted) would make sense.

Do you have a firewall installed on the PC?

Is the printer connected via usb to mac or network cable to the router?

Is there any point to this reply considering the problem was solved.

I'll close this thread!
